Design Memory
On design memory — why preserving the reasoning behind past decisions, not just the drawings, turns experience into an active part of future design work.
Design is often thought of as the act of creating something new. Yet, powerful design draws sustenance not only from innovation but also from its relationship with the past. When designing a product, space, exhibition, or communication system, the systematic preservation of prior decisions, experiments, user behaviors, failures, and contextual information renders the design process more informed. Therefore, building a design memory is not merely about keeping an archive; it is about transforming past experience into an active component of future decisions.
Design memory can consist of various layers. The first layer comprises drawings, sketches, models, technical details, material choices, and production files. However, these alone are insufficient. When a designer works on a new project, the system can display decisions made, materials used, or issues encountered under similar past conditions. Thus, the archive transforms from a passive repository into an active design partner.
